The Krewe of Kalypso began as a friendly gathering in 2013 with family & friends in Jackson County, MS who have a love of the sea and the freedom being pirates can bring.
In 2017 this small band of pirates, by a democratic vote of course, officially became known as the Krewe of Kalypso.
The decision was made to take the name of the sea goddess, Kalypso, whose story comes from the Odyssey of Odysseus during his travels after the Trojan War.
Kalypso had a beautiful voice. She and her sirens were known to sing many a sailor to his death with their mesmerizing voices in song.
Kalypso so enraptured Odysseus that she was able to hold him captive on her island for 7 years until Odysseus became so homesick that the gods felt sorry for him and convinced Kalypso to let him return to his kingdom and his wife.
Along the way to his home, Odysseus and his men did plunder and pillage villages along the shores of the Mediterranean, thus leading us to believe they were some of the original pirates of lore.
So, in honor of Kalypso, the goddess of the sea, her sirens, their beautiful music and Odysseus, the pirate king, we are now and forever known as
THE KREWE OF KALYPSO
